Ghana gained independence from the British on 6th March 1957 under the leadership of Osagyefo DR Kwame Nkrumah. It is celebrated every year and this year’s celebration will be exactly 67 years since the nation attained independence.
A series of events have been arranged to take place, one of them will be a football match between Asante Kotoko and Asec Mimosas from Ivory Coast.
It is officially confirmed that the Baba Yara gates will be opened free of charge for football fans to commemorate the Independence Day of Ghana as the game is scheduled to take place on 5th March, the eve of the day of the celebration.
6th March of every year is a precious day for every Ghanaian as schools, offices and the everyday Ghanaian come together to enjoy the day.
In attendance will be His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo Dankwa, Ghana’s president and the president of Ivory Coast, and His Excellency Allasane Ouattara.
Asante Kotoko and Asec Mimosas are arguably the two most prestigious football clubs in West Africa with a rich history.
Their meetings are always competitive and it brings back memories of the 1980s and the 1990s when they used to challenge for inter-club competition on the continent.
The President Cup has been in existence since 1969. Asante Kotoko has won most titles on 8 occasions. The current holders are Accra Hearts of Oak who defeated Asante Kotoko 1-0 in 2023 to lift the trophy.
Asec Mimosas is the first club outside Ghana to be invited to compete in the President’s Cup of Ghana.
