Ghana defender Daniel Amartey has finally opened up on the controversial penalty incident against the Bafana Bafana on Sunday at the Cape Coast Stadium, claiming TV footage didn’t capture what really happened on the pitch.
The Leicester City defender was judged to have been brought down inside South Africa box in the 33rd minute before the referee pointed to the spot.
Captain Andre Ayew stepped up and converted the controversial penalty, a goal that gave Ghana qualification the play-offs.
The penalty has created lots of controversies both in Ghana and in South Africa in South Africa with SAFA confirming they will lodge an official complaint to both CAF and FIFA.
Despite the public outcry about the penalty, Amartey insists he was pulled down by a South African player and that the call by the centre referee was spot on.
“After the game, I asked Amartey about the penalty, he told me he was pulled,” former Ghana player Awudu Issaka said on Angel TV, as cited by Ghanaian journalist Saddick Adams.
“He said the South African defender held his hand at the back and pulled him but left it when he was falling off.
“The camera didn’t capture that.”
SAFA have since confirmed they feel “robbed” and will lodge an official complaint with CAF and FIFA, with more details set to be confirmed in a press conference on Wednesday.
Ghana will play in the play-offs in March next year.
