In a remarkable display, Fiston Mayele, the Congolese striker, showcased his brilliance by scoring a goal and providing an assist, securing Tanzanian champions Young Africans’ spot in the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.
They achieved this feat with a 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Marumo Gallants in the second leg of the semifinals.
Despite Gallants having opportunities to stage a comeback, Yanga’s triumph resulted in a 4-1 aggregate victory. They now await their matchup against either USM Alger of Algeria or Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas in the final.
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenberg witnessed the intense second leg, as Gallants sought to overturn a 2-0 first leg defeat in Dar es Salaam. The opening twenty-five minutes remained goalless for both teams.
However, Gallants had a few scoring chances, with their best opportunity arising in the 33rd minute when Ranga Chivaviro set up Celimpilo Ngema for a low shot, but Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra made a crucial save with his feet.
Yanga capitalized on Gallants’ failure to find the much-needed goal, and it was Mayele who sealed the fate of the semifinal just before halftime.
A defensive error from Gallants’ substitute Ayanda Nkili allowed Mayele to break through, and although his initial shot was saved by keeper Washington Arubi, Mayele capitalized on the rebound and calmly tapped it into an empty net.
Mayele’s brilliance continued in the 62nd minute when he showcased his individual skill against defender Tshepo Gumede, maneuvering the ball skillfully and leaving Gumede behind. He then sprinted past the defender and delivered a cross for Kennedy Musonda to finish, doubling Yanga’s lead.
In second half stoppage time, Gallants managed to find a consolation goal through Chivaviro, but it came too late to dampen the spirits of the jubilant Yanga supporters. This historic victory marks the first time in Young Africans’ history that they have reached the final of a CAF club competition.
