Swiss-born Ghanaian center-back, Gregory Kwesi Wuthrich, has encountered a setback in his transfer plans as he failed to pass his medical examination with Bundesliga club FC Augsburg.
This development was confirmed by his current club, Austrian Bundesliga side SK Sturm Graz.
The 28-year-old defender’s intended move to FC Augsburg hit a roadblock when he did not receive a clean bill of health following his mandatory medical assessment earlier today.
Andreas Schicker, the sporting director, acknowledged the breakdown of the deal with FC Augsburg regarding Gregory Kwesi Wuthrich’s services. He was quoted by Laola1 saying, “He (Gregory Kwesi Wuthrich) is returning to Graz. The transfer to the German Bundesliga won’t proceed due to medical check complications.”
Schicker also reassured the fans about the future of their reliable center-back, highlighting his continued involvement in the ongoing league season. Despite the disappointment of the failed transfer, Schicker expressed contentment that Wuthrich will remain a part of their team.
“The Sturm fans don’t have to worry in the future either. We know that Gregory’s dream was to play in a top European league, and we wouldn’t have put any obstacles in his way because we wanted to make his dream possible. In the end, it didn’t work out. That’s bitter for Gregory. But from a purely sporting perspective, we’re happy that he’s still with us in Graz.”
The former BSC Young Boys defender has participated in five league matches for SK Sturm Graz in the early stages of the Austrian Bundesliga 2023-24 season.
Although he has represented Switzerland in national youth teams, Gregory Kwesi Wuthrich retains the eligibility to switch his international allegiance and potentially play for Ghana on the global stage.
