In a recent interview with Citi Sports, seasoned sports journalist Ken Bediako has raised concerns about Ghana’s prospects in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
With the Black Stars gearing up for their campaign, Bediako, who has covered the team extensively over the years, including their triumphs in 1978 and 1982, expressed skepticism about their chances of clinching a fifth continental title.
As Ghana prepares to face Cape Verde in their AFCON opener on Sunday, January 14, 2024, followed by matches against Egypt and Mozambique, Bediako remains uncertain about the team’s ability to secure a victorious return.
Ghana’s last AFCON triumph dates back to 1982, and Bediako’s doubts mirror those of former 1978 AFCON winner Mohammed Polo, who also questioned the readiness of the Black Stars to claim the title.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Bediako emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences, stating, “We’ve already had this Comoros experience, so I think the coach (Chris Hughton) should by now know what to do, realize his mistakes, and put up a good team. But to win the cup, I’m not too sure about that.”
