Ethiopian football is in mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of Alelegn Azene, a player in the Ethiopian Premier League, as confirmed by the Ethiopian Football Federation.
The 26-year-old, who played for both the Ethiopian national team and Bahir Dar city, passed away under circumstances yet to be disclosed.
In a statement shared on social media, the Ethiopian Football Federation expressed profound sadness over Azene’s untimely demise: “Alelegn Azene, who was playing in the Ethiopian national team and Bahir Dar city, has passed away suddenly. Alelegn Azene was a player who has been selected for our national team many times and is one of the players who are currently showing their best in our football. The Ethiopian Football Federation expresses its deep sorrow over the shocking and heartbreaking death of Alelegn and wishes his condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire football family.”
Azene, reportedly one of the highest-paid players in Ethiopia, had recently celebrated his marriage in a well-attended ceremony in his home country, adding to the poignancy of his passing.
Former CAF media expert Collins Okinyo, reacting to Azene’s death on social media, called for heightened attention to mental health issues within football clubs, emphasizing the importance of supporting players’ well-being.
As arrangements for his funeral are pending, it has been confirmed that Azene will be laid to rest on Wednesday, marking a solemn farewell to a talented athlete.
Azene’s football journey included stints with Bahir Dar and Hawassa Kenema FC, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
