Per African Soccer Zone, Ghanaian giants Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko are among the top 10 worst-performed clubs in the 2023-24 season in Africa.
The rankings indeed reflect how every team has performed on the continent.
Wydad Athletic of Morocco who lost against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League finals in the 2022-23 season can never understand the disastrous campaign they have endured in the 2023-24 season. WAC of Morocco are 6th on the Botola PRO table with just a game to end the season. Their rivals Raja Casablanca are on the verge of winning the Moroccan league title and trail them by a whopping 18 points. They failed to qualify from their group in the CAF Champions League making it an abysmal campaign for the Casablanca-based club.
2000 trable winners Accra Hearts of Oak are second on the list as words cannot explain their horrible season. The Accra-based club is in a relegation fight and has won just 41 points out of a possible 96. If they fail to at least secure four points from their last two games, they could be relegated.
Kaizer Chiefs won just once in their last 11 games before the season ended. Amakhosi fans prayed the season ended very fast for them to avoid the unending embarrassment. Kaizer Chiefs finished 10th winning just 36 points from 30 games. Their performance was a relegation performance and are lucky to remain in the PSL.
Ranked 4th, Kumasi Asante Kotoko currently sits 8th on the GPL log but has suffered in the season. They have been so poor making the fans very angry with how things have panned out for the two-time winners of the coveted CAF Champions League.
Ethiopia’s Saint George has been bad per their standard albeit they are 5th in the Ethiopian Premier League trailing leaders Ethiopia Nigd Bank by 13 points with only four rounds of games left.
6th worst team of the season is Primeiro de Agosto of Angola. With two games to end the season, the Angolans are 7th on the table with 19 points separating the leaders Petro Luanda.
Etoile du Sahel finished bottom of their group in the CAF Champions League. In the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle Championship Group, they sit 5th with two games to end the season making thei7th-placeded rankings a deserved one.
AS Vita finished 5th in the Congolese Ligue 1 Championship Group. They won just two of their last 10 games in the season. It is not surprising to see them ranked. 8th
9th on the rankings is Club Africain from Tunisia. The Tunisians disappointedly failed to beat the lowly Academica Lobito to secure a place in the Confederation Cup quarter-finals. It was an embarrassing moment for the Tunisians when many thought they were going to brush aside the poor Academica. They are third in the Tunisian League but are nowhere near good. They have won just once in their last 8 Tunisian Professionnelle Championship Group games with only two rounds to end the season.
The 10th worst team per African Soccer Zone is Simba SC of Tanzania. Though they reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League, Simba finished 3rd in the Ligi Kuu Bara. It’s quite surprising to see Simba in the list but it is because of their recent standard. Their rivals Yanga have won the last three Tanzanian League titles coupled with their inability to qualify for the 2024-25 CAF Champions League making Simba fans feel that it is a failed season.
