Former Ghana international Dan Quaye has stated he was not surprised by the Black Stars’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The match, held at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya on Tuesday, leaves Ghana on the brink of failing to qualify for the continent’s premier tournament, set to take place in Morocco next year.
The Black Stars, who are four-time AFCON champions, have struggled in the qualifying series, remaining winless after four matches. Their last failure to qualify for the AFCON tournament dates back to 2004, heightening the stakes for the national team as they face a daunting path ahead.
In an interview with Bryt FM, Quaye, a former Hearts of Oak defender, expressed his disappointment in the players’ commitment and mentality during the game. “I’m not surprised by the defeat. The performance they exhibited at the Accra Sports Stadium isn’t the same as what was shown in Libya. I realized things were going to be tough for Ghana from the blast of the whistle because the players didn’t show any signs of commitment and a winning mentality on the field,” he remarked.
As the Black Stars aim to salvage their AFCON hopes, they must secure victories against already-qualified Angola and Niger in their upcoming matches while also hoping Sudan falters against these opponents.
