Former Ghanaian striker Eric Bekoe has revealed that Egyptian media questioned why he was overlooked for Black Stars call-ups despite excelling in the Egyptian league.
Bekoe, who played for Petrojet SC between 2008 and 2011, enjoyed a prolific spell in Egypt, scoring 65 goals in 80 appearances. His impressive performances earned him recognition as one of the best foreign players in the Egyptian league at the time.
Speaking on Sporty Drive, Bekoe recounted an interview on Egyptian national TV, where journalists expressed confusion over his absence from Ghana’s national team.
“I was interviewed on Egyptian national TV, where they asked why I wasn’t being called up by Ghana. They wondered if Ghana didn’t respect the Egyptian league because I was one of the best foreign players,” Bekoe stated.
Despite his outstanding club form, Bekoe was seldom given opportunities with the Black Stars. The 37-year-old, who previously played for Asante Kotoko, was capped only once by Ghana.
His comments have reignited discussions about player selection criteria for the national team, particularly regarding the recognition of talents playing in leagues outside Europe.
