Birmingham City’s long-standing interest in Kwame Poku could face stiff competition, with clubs from Germany and Spain now monitoring the Ghanaian winger’s situation as his contract with Peterborough United runs down.
Poku has been a standout performer for Peterborough in recent seasons and was a key figure in their League One campaign last term. He racked up an impressive 12 goals and 8 assists in just 27 league appearances, earning him a place in the League One Team of the Year.
With his current contract set to expire at the end of June, the 22-year-old is free to negotiate with new clubs. However, because he is under 24, any English club signing him would still need to agree a compensation fee with Peterborough United to avoid the matter going to a tribunal.
Birmingham City have had Poku on their radar for some time. Their interest dates back to a pre-season friendly a few years ago when Poku, along with teammates Ephron Mason-Clark—now at Coventry City—and defender Ronnie Edwards, caught the eye of Blues scouts.
Although Birmingham considered a move for Poku last summer, they were deterred by Peterborough’s valuation at the time. Now, with the player nearing the end of his deal, the Championship side is weighing up another approach.
The club remains keen to bolster its attacking options ahead of the new season, but is also being cautious not to overpay. Sources close to the situation have dismissed claims that Birmingham have tabled a £30,000-a-week contract offer to Poku as inaccurate.
As the summer transfer window heats up, Birmingham must now decide whether to act swiftly or risk losing Poku to one of his growing number of European suitors.
