Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, kicked off their international preparations in style with a convincing 3-1 comeback victory over Malawi, inspired by a stunning hat-trick from forward Doris Boaduwaa.
The friendly encounter, part of Ghana’s build-up to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), saw the Queens overcome an early scare after Saani Tendai gave Malawi the lead in the 15th minute.
But the response was swift and decisive. Doris Boaduwaa equalised from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, before doubling her tally with a sharp finish in the 31st minute to hand Ghana the lead. She completed her hat-trick in the 83rd minute, showcasing her clinical instincts and capping off a dominant individual performance.
Boaduwaa, donning the iconic number 9 jersey, was a constant menace for the Malawian defense with her pace, movement, and physicality, underlining her status as one of the team’s most dangerous attackers.
The win marks a strong start to the Black Queens’ pre-WAFCON campaign, as they continue their fine-tuning under the current technical leadership.
Up next, the Black Queens will face Botswana on Tuesday, June 25 at the Ziaida Complex in Benslimane, before wrapping up their preparations against arch-rivals Nigeria on Friday, June 29 at the Lanouria Complex in a high-stakes showdown.
Ghana will open their WAFCON Group C campaign on July 7 with a blockbuster clash against defending champions South Africa, as they aim to make a deep run in the continental tournament.
