Former Ghana U-20 goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu has backed Asante Kotoko to overcome Nigeria’s Kwara United in the preliminary round of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
The Porcupine Warriors, winners of last season’s MTN FA Cup, will host the Ilorin-based side in the first leg between September 19 and 21, before travelling for the return fixture a week later, between September 26 and 28. Kwara United also secured qualification to the Confederation Cup by winning the Nigerian FA Cup.
Mutawakilu, who has the rare distinction of playing for both Kotoko (youth level) and Hearts of Oak (senior team), spent nearly a decade in Nigeria’s Premier Football League with Rangers International, Rivers United, and Akwa United. Speaking to Radio Gold, he said he expects Kotoko’s quality and experience to prevail despite the challenge.
“Continental football is a different ball game altogether. It’s not like a normal league game—it’s a game of the mind,” Mutawakilu explained. “Kwara United have made a lot of signings, but based on what I saw in the league, they can’t stand Kotoko. I watched Kotoko against Kaizer Chiefs, and I believe they have the quality to go far.”
The former national youth goalkeeper, however, cautioned that the rivalry between Ghanaian and Nigerian clubs often adds extra intensity to such contests.
“Ghana versus Nigeria games are always different—there’s culture, bragging rights, and extra motivation. But for me, I will still tip Kotoko ahead of Kwara United because I’ve played against them before,” he added.
The winner of the tie will advance to face Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club in the second preliminary round.
