Ghana Premier League powerhouse Asante Kotoko have been promised financial support from President Akufo-Addo as the team prepares to participate in the 2020/21 Caf Champions League next season.
The Porcupine Warriors Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah paid a courtesy call on the president and appealed for his support.
The 2019 Ghana FA President candidate promised that if Kotoko could get even 10% $600,000 support from government, they can make the country proud.
“It is difficult for Ghana football to succeed unless Kotoko succeeds. That’s how it has been in the past and that’s how it should be in the future,” President Akufo-Addo is quoted as saying by Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
“Kotoko are very special, cherished and play enviable roles in Ghanaian Sports development.
“Clearly it’s possible the Government should be able to assist the club, these will be temporary measures over a period of time, a year or two. Ultimately the club should be self-sufficient, generating money for keeping the club going.
“We will put our heads together to see what can be done to assist, through the minister of sports. I think it’s in the interest of Ghana to have a strong participation to fly the flag of Ghana,” he added.
The Kumasi-based club will play a Mauritanian club FC Nouadhibou in the preliminary round of the qualifiers.
The Porcupine Warriors would meet either Vipers FC or Al Hilal should they seal passage to the next phase of the qualifiers.
