News from FIFA on slots at expanded 32-teams 2023 Women’s World Cup as 29 guaranteed (plus 3 more via playoffs).
With this latest development, Africa will therefore get additional slot and will now have four teams to represent the continent on the highest level of Woman’s football after FIFA’s expansion.
Europe will get (11 up from 9)with Asia on (6)and Africa from three to (4) whiles CONCACAF gets (4) slots,
South America (3)and
Oceania with (1)slot.
Australia & NZ qualify as hosts, and has therefore taken 1 slot each from Asia & Oceania respectively.
The other 3 2023 Women’s World Cup slots will be contested by 10 teams in a playoff tournament in Australia & New Zealand with both countries taking part to play friendlies ahead of hosting the main FIFA event.
While complicated this playoff tournament does help women’s football in delivering another mini tournament before the main event.
