Black Meteors attacker, Joel Fameyeh has opened up about contracting Covid-19 and the effects it had on him and his team in general during the 2019-20 season in Russia.
According to the former Asokwa Deportivo SC hitman, the disease affected him as a player and was also the cause of his team’s relegation into the second tier of Russia Football League.
“It’s true I was infected with the deadly Covid-19 disease but initially I thought it was a normal flu because of the whether as I couldn’t breathe properly at training and decided to get some medications but the team doctor called me and asked me to stay away from getting close to people because I had tested positive for COVID-19”, he told SPORTSworldGhana in an exclusive interview.
The Ghana International also revealed the main cause of his team’s relegation from the Premier League to the Russian National Football League.
“We were not relegated because of performance but rather on technical issues because most of our players were badly hit with the virus which meant we couldn’t honour some of our games which resulted into points deduction that led to our exit from the top-flight “, he said to SPORTSworldGhana.
He further stated that it was his first time suffering relegation with a club and vowed to help his side secure promotion back into the Russian Premier League next season.
” It was a difficult thing for me to take because it was my first time being relegated with a team which wasn’t easy for me at all because I didn’t want to have unpleasant experience in my football career”, he revealed in an interview with SPORTSworldGhana.
The Blue and Whites were relegated from the top-flight in Russia at the end of the 2019-20 season and has been doing well in the Russian National Football League lying on third place before the Christmas break.
The 23-year-old predator finisher scored six goals this season for Orenburg so far and could beat his eight goals scored last season by the end of the season if he manages to stay fit.
