Swansea City Manager Steve Cooper has lauded Andre Ayew after putting up a stellar performance in the Swans 2-0 away win against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night. Ayew set up Jamal Lowe to open the scoring for the visitors.
He, however, says Swansea City must not think they are beyond their blip after the important away victory.
The Swans’ automatic promotion hopes were hugely dented after a run of four consecutive defeats, but they have responded in sublime fashion by beating both Millwall and the Owls without conceding a single goal.
Victory against Darren Moore’s men lifted the Swans up to third in the Championship table while they are now just seven points off second placed Watford and have a nine-point buffer over seventh placed Reading.
But Cooper says his side have no room for complacency with five matches left to be played in the regular season.
“No, not yet,” responded Cooper when asked if his side were over their blip.
“Obviously it was a good, positive response on Saturday and now again tonight, but there’ll be no complacency with this group.
“We’ll have to get ready for another tough game against Wycombe on Saturday.
“There’s no doubt after that tough run that we were having, we needed to stop it and get back to being us in both performances and results, and I really think we have done that in the last two games.
“The challenge for the boys, and it started on Sunday morning when I spoke to the group collectively, was to say well done for Millwall but it’s an even bigger well done if you do it as Sheffield Wednesday.
“That’s a real sign of the mentality I want.”
After a fairly even start in Sheffield, Swansea took the lead as Jamal Lowe netted his 12th goal of the campaign after impressive pressurising from Andre Ayew in the final third.
Jay Fulton then headed home in the 73rd minute to put the icing on the cake for the Swans who claimed all three points after holding on for their 20th Championship clean sheet of the 2020/21 campaign.
And Cooper lavished praised on Ayew for his efforts in the triumph over the Owls.
“For sometimes the glitz and glamour than Andre is perceived to be, we know he also does that side of the game where he’s pressing from the front, he wins the ball back and puts a team mate in to put it away and put the team 1-0 up. That is always Andre’s main focus,” added the head coach.
“It’s brilliant for Jamal to score again. You’ve got to be there to score them. Sheffield Wednesday are fighting for their lives, I’ve got a lot of respect for Darren Moore, and I know what he’ll be trying to do with the brand of football he wants to play, but we nullified them really to very little.
“I thought there was only one team that deserved to win.”
Swansea will next face Wycombe Wanderers at 12:30pm on Saturday.
