Tom Vernon, founder of the Right to Dream Academy, has heaped praise on 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi following the midfielder’s eye-catching debut for Ghana’s senior national team in their Unity Cup semifinal clash against Nigeria.
Yirenkyi, who plays for Danish side FC Nordsjaelland, made a significant impression after coming on at halftime in an unfamiliar right-back role. Despite Ghana’s 2-1 defeat, the youngster stood out for his composure, tactical awareness, and crisp distribution, helping to energize the Black Stars’ second-half performance.
“Lovely to see a new star born for the Black Stars last night with Caleb Yirenkyi making an impressive debut,” Vernon wrote in a post on LinkedIn, highlighting the importance of nurturing young talent through structured development.
Vernon, whose Right to Dream Academy played a key role in Yirenkyi’s footballing education, used the moment to emphasize the value of long-term investment in youth development.
“There is no shortcut to the long-term development process required for elite performance in any field,” he noted. “Right to Dream provides a small case study for the approach, but it’s a drop in the ocean of the talent of Ghana’s youth across all forms of intelligence.”
Yirenkyi has had a solid season with FC Nordsjaelland, contributing two goals and two assists in 17 appearances in the Danish Superliga. His assured showing against Nigeria has sparked calls for more involvement with the national team, with many tipping him to feature again in Saturday’s third-place playoff against Trinidad and Tobago.
The performance not only marks a personal milestone for the teenager but also reinforces the growing influence of Ghanaian talent developed through academies like Right to Dream.
