Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has called on Black Stars head coach Otto Addo to adopt an attacking mindset from the outset in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan on Tuesday.
Kingston believes that the team’s current approach often allows opponents to settle into the match before the Black Stars can impose themselves.
The Black Stars are set to face Sudan in the reverse fixture following a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium last Thursday. Kingston emphasizes the importance of a proactive strategy to seize control of the game early.
“So, approaching this game, go all out; you have the players. When you look at the Black Stars’ front line, everyone has what it takes to punish any defender,” Kingston told Joy Sports. “Semenyo is excelling in England, and players like Jordan Ayew, Issahaku, and Kudus Muhammad are all performing well at their clubs in Europe. We have the attacking talent to effectively challenge our opponents.”
However, Kingston also noted that the current game plan might be limiting players’ ability to express themselves, particularly in the final third of the pitch. “We need to allow them to express themselves more, especially considering the chances we missed towards the end of the previous match,” he added.
The draw leaves Sudan with four points in Group F, putting them two points ahead of Ghana, who currently sit third. The Black Stars are facing the risk of not qualifying for the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
