Goalkeepers Richard Ofori, Lawrence Ati Zigi and Felix Annan are set enter into a tough competition with Enugu Rangers Goalkeeper Nana Bonsu and Azam FC’s Razak Abalora in their bid to make the final Ghana squad for this year’s Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, SportsworldGhana.com can exclusively report.
The two goalkeepers have been on top form for their respective clubs on the African continent and could soon be handed call ups to fight for a slot in Coach Kwasi Appiah’s team ahead of the AFCON.
Bonsu, 30, made 29 saves for his team during the group stages of the Caf Confederation Cup which was the highest among his peers to be named as the best goalkeeper.
Abalora, on the other hand, has proven that he did not go to Tanzania to joke as his consistent form has earned him the No. 1 spot at Azam FC and could make a case for himself when invited for assessment by the technical handlers of the four-time African Champions.
With Coach Kwasi Appiah being tasked to win the ultimate in Egypt later this year, he would need to assemble players who are on top form and consistently excelling at their respective clubs with Richard Ofori, Felix Annan, Lawrence Ati Zigi, Nana Bonsu and Razak Abalora being the five possible candidates to battle for the first three slots of the goalkeeping department.
Speaking exclusively to SportsworldGhana.com, Black Stars goalkeeper’s trainer Richard Kingson disclosed that Nana Bonsu and Razak Abalora and are the possible two other goalkeepers who are likely to be invited into the team for thorough assessment before the final squad for the Nations Cup tournament is announced.
He says ‘’I have been following Nana Bonsu and Razak and I must say the two are doing well on the African continent and they all stand a chance of making in to the tournament in Egypt.
‘’These players are likely to be invited in the coming days to train with the team then we can access all the five goalkeepers and pick the best three to represent the country at in Egypt.
Ghana last won Cup of Nations trophy in 1982 when they beat hosts country Libya 7-6 on penalties and will be hoping to win its fifth title this year under the auspices of ex- Ghana international Kwasi Appiah.
The competition will be held from 21 June to 19 July 2019.
