Ghana international, Emmanuel Lomotey claims the Black Stars of Ghana possesses the needed quality to win their fifth Africa Cup of Nations title next year in Cameroon.
The senior national team are yet to taste glory in the championship since last winning in it 1982, a staggering 39 years ago but the midfielder believes the upcoming tournament in Cameroon could be the perfect time to grab their hands on the trophy.
However, the Black Stars will first have to battle it out from the group stage, after being drawn in Group C alongside, 1976 winners, Morocco, Gabon and Comoros – the latter making a maiden appearance at the Nations Cup.
Speaking to Onua Sports in an interview, the Amiens midfielder said: “Our target is to win the next AFCON. We know Ghanaians are expecting us to bring the trophy home and we will do our possible best to secure that.”
In the last decade, the Black Stars have suffered two major heart-breaks in the continental showpiece in their quest to win the Africa Cup. They lost to Egypt and Ivory Coast in the finals of the Angola 2010 tournament and also in Gabon & Equatorial Guinea in 2015 respectively.
The Stars will need to be at their very best this time around if Lomotey’s words are to come to fruition especially after suffering a shock round of 16 exit at the hands of Tunisia in the last edition held played in 2019.
