Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed deep concern over the Black Stars’ declining performances, urging a complete overhaul of the technical team.
Ghana’s senior national team has struggled in recent years, failing to progress beyond the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, respectively. Under coach Otto Addo, the team hit a new low by failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON—their first absence from the competition in two decades—after finishing bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches.
During a visit by Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, February 14, Otumfuo did not hold back his disappointment over the team’s performances.
“The Black Stars are now a disgrace,” he stated. “The team needs a strong technical setup to manage it properly. Right now, it is in poor shape and continues to break the hearts of Ghanaians. They exited the last tournament far too early.”
He also stressed the importance of selecting dedicated players based on merit rather than favoritism.
“Only the right players must be called up. I have told them at Kotoko as well—quality players should be given the opportunity, not just those with connections.”
Despite their AFCON failure, the Black Stars will return to action in March for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
