Manchester United has officially appointed Bruno Fernandes as the club’s new captain, replacing the outgoing Harry Maguire.
Manager Erik ten Hag made the decision to hand the armband to the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder on a permanent basis.
Fernandes has already demonstrated his leadership qualities on numerous occasions, wearing the captain’s armband for the team. As a two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, he is known for driving the highest standards throughout the squad.
Since joining Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020, Fernandes has not only been a consistent and dependable performer but also emerged as one of the team’s most prominent leaders. In his 185 appearances for the club, he has scored 64 goals and provided 54 assists.
Last season, alongside Maguire, Fernandes played a pivotal role in helping the team lift the League Cup, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought.
With this appointment, Bruno Fernandes becomes the seventh captain of Manchester United in the last ten years, following the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, and Harry Maguire’s previous stints in the position. As captain, he will continue to lead the team as they strive for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond.
