Henry Asante Twum -Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has rejected media reports suggesting Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor was influenced in his call up by the hierarchy of the country’s football governing body.
Ghana will face South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on March 25 and 28 respectively.
Coach Akonnor ahead of the qualifiers which will be played later this month, named a 29-man squad which included Kwame Poku Afriyie who plays for English League two side Colchester.
His selection has been heavily criticized by Ghanaians, questioning the inclusion of Colchester United midfielder Kwame Poku Afriyie for the Afcon qualifiers.
Ghanaians especially sports journalists are of the view the coach has been influenced by the hierarchy of the Ghana FA, but according to the PRO, the former Ghana captain is aware of every player called including Kwame Opoku Afriyie.
He, however, mentioned that the Black Stars coach had his own reservations about Kwame Opoku Afriyie.
“It’s Possible CK Akonnor had his own reservations about Kwame Afriyie Opoku” he told Oyerepa TV/ FM on Saturday.
“CK Akonnor is aware of every player called including Kwame Afriyie Opoku”
“Three meetings were held before the Black Stars list was released involving the technical director, management committee, the technical team and international relations committee which it was suggested that we monitor him closely if he fits into our scheme of things then we continue calling him”
“He is a talent and a prospect we need to tie down but it’s possible the coach had his own reservations”
