King Faisal defender Oppong Afrane has taken his club to the player status committee after a failed transfer to Hearts of Oak, according to a report filed by Presssportsgh.
The Ghanaian transfer window closed on Friday, September 8, 2023, after an extension granted by the Ghana Football Association.
Afrane, a highly-rated defender, had attracted interest from Hearts of Oak, who had hoped to secure his signature before the transfer window’s closure.
However, the transfer fell through when King Faisal decided to renegotiate a new fee for the player, despite initially agreeing to a fee that was double his release clause.
Reports suggest that King Faisal’s owner, Alhaji Grunzah, was aware of Asante Kotoko’s interest in Afrane and attempted to leverage this to force Hearts of Oak to pay more for the center-back.
This strategy backfired, and Afrane, despite agreeing to terms with Hearts of Oak, was compelled to remain with the Kumasi-based club due to the closing of the primary transfer window.
Nevertheless, Oppong Afrane and his representative feel that they have been treated unfairly and have chosen to bring King Faisal before the GFA status committee. They hope that their case will be treated with special consideration to allow him to participate in the top division this season.
Meanwhile, the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League is scheduled to commence on September 15, with Hearts of Oak facing Real Tamale United on the opening day.
