Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has called for stronger team unity and better preparation if the Black Stars are to leave a mark at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Currently topping Group I of the CAF World Cup qualifiers with 15 points, Ghana has four crucial matches left in their qualifying journey.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized that without proper cohesion and discipline, the team could struggle at the tournament, which will be co-hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico.
“The Black Stars need cohesion before the World Cup. If we don’t have that, the team will find it difficult during the tournament—even if we qualify,” he warned.
He expressed concern over poor discipline and late arrivals in camp, criticizing the trend of players being fielded immediately after arriving at the training base.
“We’ve seen cases where a player arrives late to camp, and the next day, he’s in the starting lineup. That’s unacceptable and affects the team’s unity.”
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also drew comparisons with Senegal, following their impressive 3-1 comeback win against England at the City Ground on Tuesday.
“I watched Senegal’s performance and was amazed. I asked myself if Ghana could produce such a display. They even used local players. Can we do the same?” he asked.
He stressed the need for the Ghanaian football authorities to take lessons from such performances and put the right systems in place ahead of the tournament.
Looking ahead, Ghana will travel to face Chad and then host Mali in their Matchday 7 and 8 qualifiers in September, before wrapping up their qualification campaign in October with games against Comoros and the Central African Republic.
