Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah warned he’s not good enough for Liverpool as Merseyside outfit reportedly linked.
Liverpool legend Steve McManaman believes Eddie Nketiah isn’t ‘good enough’ to play for his former side. The Gunners striker is coming to the end of his contract at the Emirates and Sunday’s clash with Everton could be his last in an Arsenal shirt.
football.london reports that in recent months, Nketiah has rejected a range of contract offers, citing the need to play more often as the reason. He’s been subsequently linked with a number of moves, predominantly to sides where minutes are guaranteed. However, according to 90 min, Nketiah’s recent progress has led to Liverpool and Chelsea contemplating whether the player could act as a strong backup option in their attacking ranks.
Nevertheless, McManaman doesn’t think that he’s got the ability to play for Jurgen Klopp’s side: “I don’t think he’s good enough for Liverpool to be honest,” he told horseracing.net. “I like Eddie Nketiah but he’s not going to dismantle any of that Liverpool front five and the club has an academy full of centre forwards, so I can’t see this move happening.”
Instead, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has suggested that he stay at Arsenal and compete for his place in Mikel Arteta’s squad: “Mikel Arteta has selected him a lot recently, but it wasn’t too long ago that he didn’t seem interested in him. He just has to work hard and keep improving,” he added.
“[Alexandre] Lacazette may leave on a free transfer this summer, so there could be space for him to continue with Arsenal, but he needs to see whether his manager is planning on bringing in two or three forwards. If he’s happy there though and he’s playing there then he should stay at Arsenal.”
As Nketiah wants to play football more regularly, a move to either Liverpool or Chelsea doesn’t make much sense on the surface of things. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out in the near future.
