Former Black Stars of Ghana midfielder, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu has claimed he would rather the national team with the Africa Cup of Nations than qualifying for next year’s World Cup.
Ghana will know their chances of chasing yet another trophy on the continent later today with the draw scheduled to take place in Cameroon. The Black Stars last won the Africa Cup in 1982 and have been on a serious charge to add to the list.
The closest the country has come to clinching the trophy have been in the finals of the 2010 and 2015 editions in Angola and Equatorial Guinea-Gabon respectively.
Ghana also missed out on the last World Cup held in Russia after failing to qualify for the championship but are desperate to be in Qatar next year.
However, Agyemang Badu has claimed he will prefer the Black Stars win a fifth AFCON title to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
“For me, I will prefer winning the AFCON even more than qualifying to the World Cup, that is my opinion,” the former Under-20 world cup winner told Starr FM.
“I have gone to five AFCON’s, I won the U-20 World Cup, I know what I have gained when I won it. So just imagine after 40-years, if these my brothers there can win the AFCON it will be a huge impact on their career and for the nation, so I will prefer that” he said.
The defensive midfielder tried to help the country win the prestigious cup during his 12 years with the national team but was to no avail, before going on to announce his retirement from international football.
