The Celtic legend reckons Jeremie Frimpong has shown exactly why he was right to back the youngster as the top right-back in the country.
The ex-Scotland international stunned Rangers supporters after picking Hoops teen sensation Frimpong ahead of Ibrox captain James Tavernier.
But after helping Celtic to Betfred Cup glory, the 19-year-old continued his incredible rise to stardom by scoring in his side’s 2-0 win over Hibs.
He told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: “Last week I was asked to pick a combined Celtic and Rangers team for the cup final and I put Frimpong at right-back.
“I got a lot of stick for it because he’s only played a handful of games.
“But I was basing it on ability and how good this kid is and what I’ve seen in the past.
“This is a guy who has made ten appearances, he’s now scored two goals, he’s got numerous assists.
The Celts cult hero hasn’t been able to play in the Europa League so far this campaign as he wasn’t named in Neil Lennon’s squad for the group stages.
But with the last 32 on the horizon after the new year, the Ghanaian sensation is aiming to make his mark on the continental stage.
Frimpong, who slotted home on 39 minutes after being played in by Odsonne Edouard, said: “I was just delighted to score my first home goal.
“It was really good, the team played amazingly and we deserved it.
“The fans are amazing so to score in front of them was the best feeling.
“I have been practising finishing in training and practice makes perfect.
“We won the final last week and I got a red card but I got over it.
“The manager told me not to worry about the sending-off and said I played well.
“It’s always good when you get the manager on side.
“I’m really excited to play in Europe — it’s going to be a good experience for me.”
Frimpong was born in the Netherlands but remains eligible to feature for Ghana’s Black Stars once head coach Kwasi Appiah extends invitation to him.
