Renowned FIFA World Cup winner and German football legend, Jurgen Kholer, has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant coaching position with the Black Stars.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the decision to part ways with coach Chris Hughton after the Black Stars’ exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. With Ghana now in need of a skilled leader, the GFA is actively seeking a coach with a minimum of 15 years of coaching experience at either the national team or club level, and a proven track record of success.
Sources close to Kholer have revealed that the former FC Viktoria Köln manager has submitted his curriculum vitae for consideration, expressing a keen interest in taking up the coaching role. Ghanaian journalist Kolog Bonaventure has confirmed Kholer’s application to the domestic football governing body.
Despite being currently unattached following his departure from FC Viktoria Köln, Kholer, who holds a UEFA Pro License certificate, brings a wealth of coaching experience. His coaching journey began in 2003, a year after concluding his professional playing career in 2002.
At 58 years old, Kholer has managed the German U21 team, served as Director of Football for Bayern Leverkusen, managed MSV Duisburg, and held the position of Director of Football at vfR Aalen. With a playing career that included stints at Juventus, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich, Kholer perfectly fits the criteria outlined by the Ghana Football Association.
His coaching credentials include the highest football license, extensive experience exceeding 15 years, a proven track record in team reconstruction, organizational skills, and the development of young talents. Kholer is also recognized for his discipline and leadership qualities.
As part of the German 1990 FIFA World Cup-winning team, where he played as a defender, Kholer brings the perspective of having excelled at the highest level of national team football. With 102 caps and two goals to his name, he is affectionately known as the “Football God” due to his qualities as a center-back during his playing days.
