Southampton teenager Isaac Boakye King has declared his allegiance to the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, despite being eligible to play for England.
The 15-year-old midfielder, who has had stints with Chelsea and Arsenal’s youth teams, has chosen to represent Ghana, citing a stronger emotional connection to the West African nation.
In an interview with Accra-based Mothers FM, Boakye King revealed that he is open to playing for either Ghana or England, as long as he gets to enjoy his football. However, his heart remains with the Black Stars.
“I won’t say I prefer any national team. I will be happy to play for anyone as long as I am playing football and enjoying it,” he said.
Boakye King has been training with top Ghanaian players such as Andre Ayew, Mubarak Wakaso, Kasim Adams, Benjamin Afutu, Isaac Coffie, and Alhassan Wakaso in Ghana over the past three weeks. He believes that he can fit into any team and is willing to work hard to achieve his goals.
“I have always been close to Ghana but I am ready to play for any national team. If it’s Ghana that comes first or England, I will take it. England and Ghana have very talented players but me as a midfielder, I think I fit into any team. It will have to be Ghana at international level,” Boakye King emphasized.
The talented midfielder currently plays for Southampton’s youth team and is expected to make a name for himself in the world of football in the years to come.
