Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye urges overhaul of Ghana Football Association for national teams improvement

In the wake of Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2023 AFCON, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, former Minister of Youth and Sports, took to Twitter to advocate for a comprehensive reform of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Vanderpuye, currently a Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, expressed concerns about conflicts of interest within the GFA, impacting the morale of the national team, the Black Stars.

Addressing the setbacks, including the 2-2 draw with Mozambique and the subsequent dismissal of head coach Chris Hughton, Vanderpuye emphasized the need for prompt action to address the issue.

In an interview with Citi News, he stated, “We find ourselves in this predicament when persons work in club management, football administration at the national level, and as managers and agents for players and technical personnel”

“This overlap creates a breeding ground for conflicts of interest,”

Vanderpuye suggested that an interim management committee could be a practical option for a thorough assessment and resolution of the ongoing challenges affecting Ghana’s football performance.

“This disagreement is lowering our players’ morale, which is distressing. It’s time to confront the issue, and I agree with those who argue for a full overhaul of the GFA.

An interim management committee might be a realistic option for properly assessing and resolving the problem,” he noted.
