Southampton FC have completed the signing of highly-rated German-born Ghanaian centre-back Joshua Quarshie from Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim ahead of the 2025 summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old defender, who spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at 2. Bundesliga outfit SpVgg Greuther Fürth, joins the relegated Premier League side on a four-year contract, becoming the club’s first signing under new manager Will Still.
“Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce that an agreement has been reached to secure the signing of promising young central defender Joshua Quarshie from TSG Hoffenheim,” the club confirmed in an official statement.
Quarshie, a Germany U20 international, will officially join the Saints on July 1st. His move to St. Mary’s marks a permanent departure from Hoffenheim, following a productive loan spell during which he made 25 appearances for Greuther Fürth in all competitions.
Speaking after signing, Quarshie expressed his excitement about the new chapter in his career.
“It makes me feel very happy because Southampton is a very big club with a very good history,” he said. “From the first second, I felt Southampton is the right club. English football is a little bit rough and I like this kind of playing style. With my height and my body, I think I’m in the right spot. Since I was a little kid, I dreamed of playing in England and now it’s becoming a reality.”
Southampton’s Sporting Director Johannes Spors praised the defender’s physical presence and experience at such a young age.
“Joshua is a talented young player with good experience for his age, having played more than 80 senior games already in his career, and has tremendous physical qualities,” Spors noted. “His outstanding athleticism makes him a natural fit for the energetic playing style our new manager hopes to implement. As a club, we are committed to improving young players, and Joshua is very determined to develop his game with us.”
Standing at 1.96 meters tall, Quarshie brings physicality and aerial strength to the Saints’ backline. Despite representing Germany at U18, U19, and U20 levels, he remains eligible to play for Ghana at the senior international level due to his heritage.
