Ghana is exploring alternative venues, including neighboring Togo, to host its crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled the country’s major sports stadia unfit for international matches.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, along with Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Stadium, has been closed for maintenance following CAF’s directive. With the qualifier just a month away and no domestic venue currently available, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is urgently considering using Togo’s national stadium, which meets CAF’s standards.
There are also ongoing discussions about potentially hosting the match in Ivory Coast, a nation with strong ties to Ghana, particularly following their support for the Black Stars during the 2024 AFCON tournament.
While Ghana hopes to resolve the stadium issues promptly, the possibility of playing this critical home match abroad remains a significant consideration. The upcoming game against Sudan is vital for the Black Stars, who are currently in third place with just one point from two games in the qualifiers. They must secure back-to-back victories against Sudan to improve their chances of qualifying for AFCON 2025.
