Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has emphasized the country’s determination to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that missing out is not an option.
His statement comes in the wake of the Black Stars’ failure to secure a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the first time in two decades that Ghana will not participate in the prestigious continental tournament.
Under head coach Otto Addo, Ghana endured a disappointing qualifying campaign, finishing at the bottom of their group with just three points, after three draws and three defeats.
Expressing his disappointment, Kofi Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Buem constituency, made it clear that Ghana is focused on ensuring participation in the upcoming World Cup.
“It doesn’t speak well that the African continent will meet for a football competition and Ghana isn’t there,” he told Sporty FM.
He further stressed the need for the right approach in securing qualification: “The next competition that we don’t want to miss is the World Cup, but this wish should not lead to a decision that will not help us.”
With Ghana looking to bounce back from their AFCON disappointment, the Black Stars will aim to continue their resurgence in the World Cup qualifiers. After securing back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic last year, they will face Chad and Madagascar in the crucial Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures in March.
