Ghanaian international Kwame Poku continued his red-hot form in English League One, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist to lead Peterborough United to a stunning 6-1 derby victory over Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Poku’s hat-trick marked a derby rout, with Peterborough delivering another record-breaking performance against Cambridge, following last season’s 5-0 triumph. Cambridge, who came into the match on a five-game winning streak with no goals conceded, saw their impressive run come to an abrupt halt.
Peterborough struck first after 25 minutes when Ricky-Jade Jones tapped in from Jack Sparkes’ cross. Poku quickly doubled the lead by finishing Joel Randall’s low delivery. His second goal came with a clinical strike from the edge of the area, which ricocheted in off the post. Malik Mothersille added a fourth goal from the penalty spot, awarded after Poku was brought down by Cambridge’s Liam Bennett.
Ryan De Havilland extended Peterborough’s lead to five early in the second half, while Sullay Kaikai scored a consolation goal for Cambridge in the 84th minute. Poku sealed the victory in the final minute with his third goal, driving past Vicente Reyes to complete his hat-trick.
With this performance, Poku now boasts 10 goals and six assists in 16 appearances across all competitions this season. The 23-year-old has previously represented Ghana at the U-20 level and debuted for the Black Stars in the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers against São Tomé and Príncipe.
