The Executive vice president of Goldfields Company Limited, Mr Alfred Baku has revealed the decision behind the Company’s financial support to Medeama Sporting Club.
Speaking to Kessben FM in Kumasi in an interview conducted by George Mensah ( Icon), the President of Goldfields Companies Limited in West Africa gave out reasons why the company joined hands with the Tarkwa based club.
“We decided to support Medeama SC because we saw what they were doing in the Ghana Premier League and therefore decided to help them with financial assistance to help push the team in the right direction and needed help and support to ensure its stay at the top-level”, he said.
He also revealed that the company did not stop being the headline sponsor of the Black Stars because of monetary reasons but decided they had done enough for the senior national team and thought it was the right time to move on since GNPC came on board to sponsor the Stars.
“We didn’t cut the ties between us and the National team because we run out of cash or were financially constrained but rather we decided it was time to end our marriage with the Black Stars which had nothing to do with money”, he acknowledged.
According to Mr. Alfred, the mining company, as part of their corporate social responsibilities took a firm approach which would help the company to familiarize with the local people in the vicinity and therefore saw the need to partner the Ghanaian top-flight side to reach a higher level.
“Medeama is a team in our catchment area and were being managed by one person so the company decided to cut the ties between them and the Black Stars to be able to fully give our support to the club and we’re very excited about the decision we made so far”, Mr. Alfred stated.
He furthermore revealed that, since both parties joined hands together, the Yellow and Mauves have been able to qualify into the CAF clubs competition twice and won the FA Cup too in 2015 when they beat Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC at the Sekondi Essipong Sports Stadium.
“Since we joined Medeama SC as their sponsors, we can boast of a lot of good things that have been achieved because the team has twice qualified to represent Ghana in CAF Inter-clubs competition and we can all say that Goldfields as a company brings luck to every sporting organization we associate ourselves with the Black Stars as a big example when Ghana first qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and 2010 respectively”, he added.
On the other hand, Mr. Alfred also revealed the ultimate goal of the company’s mission as a title sponsor for the Tarkwa club.
“Our aim is to provide financial support to Medeama Sporting Club to propel the club to win their maiden Ghana Premier League trophy and we believe the team is not far from achieving that feat in the near future to make the people in and around Tarkwa and its Environs proud and happy “, he noted.
Gold Fields Ghana LTD announced a lucrative sponsorship package for Medeama SC worth 300,000.00 for the next three seasons starting from the beginning of 2020-21 Ghana Premier League season in October.
Medeama SC secured their first win of the season in four matches against Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs in Cape Coast last Saturday.”
