FIFA has turned down a proposal from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Despite fulfilling all requirements under FIFA’s Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP) for VAR, the GFA’s proposal was rejected.
Initially, the GFA sought to apply VAR only to selected televised games, but FIFA suggested broadcasting all nine league games on TV before approving the implementation of VAR in Ghana.
The Ghana FA’s Executive Committee is expected to present FIFA’s new recommendations on VAR to Congress.
VAR is an assistant referee in football that intervenes in decisions made by the referee, requesting on-field reviews with the use of video footage and headset communication.
IFAB included VAR in the Laws of the Game in 2018 to reduce critical errors in referees’ decision-making.
Currently, only a few African countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt, use VAR in their domestic competitions.
