Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Nana Sarfo Oduro, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to direct his concerns about the Black Stars’ budget to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation rather than the Football Association.
According to Oduro, the Ghanaian leader was misinformed when he instructed the Sports Minister to hold the GFA accountable for the national team’s expenditure. He explained that while the GFA prepares and submits a composite budget, it is the Sports Ministry that approves and disburses the funds.
“If the President and the people of Ghana want to hold someone accountable, it should be the Ministry and not the GFA. The GFA doesn’t spend money. It is the Ministry that does,” he told Connect FM.
He further emphasized that the GFA’s role is limited to submitting the budget, while all financial transactions and spending are handled by the government.
“The President has been misled in making that statement. The GFA does not spend on the Black Stars. The FA submits the budget for approval, and once approved, the Ministry handles all financial matters. If Ghanaians seek accountability, they should direct their concerns to the Ministry.”
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is the official government body responsible for managing sports policies, funding, and oversight in Ghana. Oduro believes that any calls for transparency should be focused on the Ministry, as it controls the financial aspects of the Black Stars and other national teams.
