Veteran striker Abednego Tetteh has announced his retirement from Heart of Lions, following his outspoken criticism of the Ghana Premier League (GPL).
The former GPL Golden Boot winner, who previously shone for Bibiani Gold Stars, recently stirred controversy by calling for the cancellation of the 2024/25 season, accusing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of mismanaging the league.
His comments followed the league’s temporary suspension after the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as ‘Nana Pooley,’ during a Week 19 fixture in Nsoatre. Despite the pause, the league is set to resume on March 7, with Matchday 23 fixtures confirmed by the GFA.
In a post on his social media page, Tetteh confirmed his departure, writing: *“Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my retirement from Heart of Lions.”
Heart of Lions, however, quickly distanced themselves from his remarks.
Tetteh enjoyed a standout season at Bibiani Gold Stars, winning the GPL Golden Boot with 16 goals in 19 matches. However, his second campaign with the club was less impactful, as he managed just nine appearances and a single goal under Coach Frimpong Manso.
Before his time at Gold Stars, Tetteh had a brief stint with Faroese club Hoyvik and Ghanaian side King Faisal. He first gained prominence in 2016 with Bechem United, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 23 league matches, playing a key role in their FA Cup triumph.
His spell at Hearts of Oak was less successful, making just five appearances before mutually terminating his contract after 15 months with the club.
