Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has announced his departure from the realm of football, declaring that he has achieved all his ambitions within the sport.
Nyantakyi’s illustrious tenure in Ghanaian football began in 2005 and endured until the exposure of corruption allegations in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ exposé in 2018. During his leadership, he steered the Black Stars to their historic World Cup debut in 2006.
Despite speculation about a potential return to football administration following his recent exoneration from suspension by FIFA, the 55-year-old has opted for a different trajectory, citing a lack of further objectives in the sport.
In an interview with Onua TV, Nyantakyi revealed his intention to venture into politics, highlighting its pivotal significance. He asserted, “Politics is the ultimate. In all we do…you need political guidance.”
Reflecting on his sporting achievements, Nyantakyi emphasized his unparalleled success, stating, “I have excelled in Sports. You can’t mention three or four people who are famous in sports in Ghana without adding me. I have reached the pinnacle of my career in sports.”
Nyantakyi, who previously served as one of the few Ghanaians on the FIFA Council, alongside Ohene Djan in the 1960s, underscored his determination to leverage his expertise and networks for the advancement of his nation through political involvement.
Expressing his motivation, he declared, “I want to use the knowledge, experience, and connections that I have acquired for political influence and help the people of this country.”
Formally announcing his candidacy for the parliamentary seat in Ejisu following the passing of John Kumah, Nyantakyi marks a significant transition from the football arena to the political sphere, driven by his aspiration to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
