Manchester City may be facing challenges converting chances at the senior level, but their academy continues to shine, as demonstrated in a resounding 6-1 victory over Feyenoord in the UEFA Youth League.
Sixteen-year-old Reigan Heskey continued his stellar season with a brace, while winger Farid Alfa-Ruprecht added a stunning volley. However, the spotlight was stolen by English-born Ghanaian forward, Ryan McAidoo, a summer signing from Chelsea, who delivered an 18-minute hat-trick off the bench, cementing his reputation as one of City’s brightest young talents.
Coming on with City holding a narrow 2-1 lead, McAidoo needed just two minutes to double their advantage. His first touch converted a precise through-ball from Justin Oboavwoduo, and moments later, Oboavwoduo dispossessed the Feyenoord goalkeeper, gifting McAidoo his second with a tap-in. The young forward capped off his treble with a confident penalty, stepping up ahead of fellow hat-trick contender Heskey.
“I have got a teammate, Harrison Miles, who jokes, ‘Two touches, two goals.’ This time, it was three touches and three goals,” McAidoo shared with a smile after the game.
Rising Star in City’s Ranks
McAidoo has already tallied seven goals and five assists in 14 appearances across various age groups this season. His approach? Keeping it simple.
“I don’t think too much about the opponent—I just come onto the pitch and play,” McAidoo said. “I want to excite the fans and make an impact. I don’t mind where I play as long as I create and bring excitement.”
Adapting with Ease
McAidoo’s summer switch from Chelsea to City has been seamless. “I already knew most of the players through England camps, so it felt like fitting in rather than adapting,” he said. “The City style suits me because I like being on the ball and creating chances.”
Eyes on the Future
Despite his rapid rise, McAidoo remains grounded and focused on the long term. “I’m a strong believer in God, and I know everything is God-given,” he said. “My goal is clear: first-team football.”
As City’s academy continues to thrive, McAidoo’s electric performances suggest he could soon be making waves at a higher level.
