Former Ghana international George Owu has urged Ghanaians to rally behind Black Stars coach Otto Addo amid growing criticism of the team’s recent poor performances in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Black Stars have had a challenging qualification campaign, having lost two and drawn two of their first four matches. With just two points, they currently sit third in Group F, heading into the final round of qualifiers this month.
Ghana, four-time AFCON champions, now face the daunting task of securing victories against already-qualified Angola and bottom-placed Niger while hoping Sudan falters in their remaining games to keep their qualification hopes alive for next year’s tournament in Morocco.
In an interview with Kessben FM, Owu, who previously played for Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold, called on the nation to continue supporting Addo through these difficult times.
“Otto Addo is not new to the Black Stars as coach. Truth be told, all is not well with our national team, but I implore Ghanaians to stand behind the coach and support him to turn things around,” Owu stated.
The Black Stars are set to travel to Luanda to face Angola on November 15, before hosting Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18, 2024.
Owu, 42, earned 10 caps for the Black Stars during his international career. He made his Ghana debut in November 2003 and served as the second-choice goalkeeper at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
