Ex-Black Stars forward Augustine Arhinful has expressed his disappointment in the lack of safety at Ghana Premier League match venues, saying Ghanaians cannot be faulted for focusing on European leagues.
Speaking during an interview with Sporty FM, Arhinful stressed that incidents of violence, such as the tragic stabbing of a fan at a recent league match, undermine the growth of local football.
“I can’t blame Ghanaians who focus on the foreign leagues. If people are dying at the stadium, why should I take my kids there?” he questioned.
Arhinful also took a swipe at the Club Licensing Board, labeling it as ineffective. He highlighted the persistent failure of clubs to meet basic requirements yet still being granted licenses to compete.
“The Club Licensing Board in Ghana is weak. We fall short in almost all the requirements needed, and yet the clubs are still granted licenses,” he lamented.
His comments come in the wake of a Kotoko fan being killed during a league game at Nsoatre over the weekend.
In response to the violence, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has indefinitely suspended Nsoatreman FC’s home venue and halted the Ghana Premier League as investigations continue.
