Kwabena Owusu has sparked conversations within Ghanaian football circles after making a public appeal to join Asante Kotoko.
The Ghana international, who has spent much of his career in Europe, expressed his desire to return home and represent one of the country’s most storied clubs.
In an interview with Ezra Television, the former Ghana U-20 striker made a passionate plea to the life patron and owner of Asante Kotoko, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, calling on him to offer him a contract. Owusu revealed he is open to joining the Porcupine Warriors if a lucrative offer is presented, stating his readiness to contribute to the club’s resurgence.
“When they (Kotoko) comes to me with a good money, why not? I prefer playing in your motherland than an abroad, I am available if Nana (Otumfuo) is ready to have my services at his club,” Owusu said in the interview.
His call has gone viral on social media, drawing comparisons to recent homecomings by high-profile Ghanaian players such as Sulley Muntari and Samuel Inkoom, who returned to the Ghana Premier League after years abroad.
Owusu’s football journey began with trials at Racing de Santander and AD Alcorcón B, but it was a loan spell at CD Toledo in Spain that truly launched his professional career. His impressive performances in Spain eventually earned him a call-up to the Ghana national team in 2019, and he went on to earn three international caps, including a start in the Black Stars’ 2019 Africa Cup of Nations group match against Guinea-Bissau, according to the Ghana FA.
As of now, Asante Kotoko—who are preparing to face Golden Kick SC in the MTN FA Cup final on Sunday, June 16—have not officially responded to Owusu’s appeal.
With the Porcupine Warriors expected to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season and a potential return to continental football, Owusu’s plea could yet open the door to a headline-grabbing homecoming.
