Amos Frimpong, the former captain of Asante Kotoko, has expressed his willingness to take up a role at the club if called upon by its life Patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
This statement comes in the aftermath of the establishment of an Interim Management Committee by Otumfuo, following the dissolution of the Nana Yaw Amponsah-led management and Board, as their three-year mandate came to an end.
The club’s previous Board, established in 2020, was chaired by businessman Dr. Kwame Kyei, with Jude Arthur serving as the vice chair. Other members included Evelyn Nsiah Asare, Kofi Amoah Abban, Martin Osei Brown, Nana Ankobeahene of Asanteman – Baffour Kwame Kusi, Alhaji Lamin, and Joseph Yaw Adu.
Despite being composed of capable and experienced individuals, the dissolved Board faced challenges in resolving conflicts, leading to limited success.
The persistent clashes between Board Chair Dr. Kwame Kyei and Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah were a recurring issue during the past three years.
Undeterred by the past discord between the dissolved Board and management team, Amos Frimpong is open to contributing if the opportunity arises.
While he has not retired from professional football, the 31-year-old right back, who currently plays for Guinean side Club Industriel de Kamsar, is prepared to serve the Kotoko family in any capacity.
Frimpong also praised the new Interim Management Committee, which sees the return of Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum to the team.
In an interview with Citi Sports, Frimpong stated, “At the moment I am still active, I haven’t given up on football. Any role that I am assigned, I won’t hesitate to offer my experience, if I’m called upon to help the club.”
He called on the club’s supporters to show up at the stadium and support the team in the upcoming season, emphasizing the crucial role fans play in the team’s progress. He pointed out that strong fan support leads to better performances, drawing a comparison to seasons when the club had full backing.
Frimpong’s plea to the supporters was to rally behind the team, acknowledging that without their support, the club’s performance is affected.
“With the new appointment, I am sure things are going to be difficult at the club, but I believe if the supporters rally their support behind the club and give the players the needed support, the club can perform well and win some trophies.”
“With the little experience I gathered from my time at the club, in the seasons where we have the full support of the club, we tend to perform well. But If it is otherwise, the season becomes difficult.”
“This coming season, I am pleading with the supporters of the club to support the club really well, because without them the club does not function well.”
Kotoko’s first match of the 2023/24 league season is against newly-promoted side Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, followed by a match against Gold Stars in Bibiani in the second week.
Prosper Narteh Ogum, who guided the team to its 24th premier league title in the 2021/22 campaign, will aim to replicate that success in his second term.
The 2023/24 premier league season is scheduled to commence on September 15, 2023.
