Ipswich Town are reportedly targeting Ghana international Kwame Poku on a free transfer as they prepare for life back in the Championship following relegation from the English Premier League.
Poku, 23, recently departed Peterborough United after his contract expired, ending a three-year spell with the League One outfit. His departure has triggered a scramble for his signature, with clubs in England, Scotland, Portugal, Belgium, and Germany all expressing interest.
Despite a campaign disrupted by injury, Poku impressed with 12 goals and 8 assists in just 27 league appearances last season. His performances have made him one of the most sought-after free agents in the EFL this summer.
Ipswich, under manager Kieran McKenna, are eager to reinforce their squad for an immediate Premier League return and see Poku as a valuable addition. However, they face stiff competition from promotion rivals Birmingham City, who have long tracked the former Colchester United winger. Reports suggest Birmingham may now be considering other options after delays in their pursuit.
There is also significant interest in Poku from clubs abroad, with teams in Portugal, Germany, and Belgium monitoring the situation. A potential move to mainland Europe is said to be a “growing concern” for Peterborough, who would be entitled to minimal compensation if the player moves overseas.
Born in England to Ghanaian parents, Poku has already featured for the Ghana national team at senior level and is seen as a talent with the potential to thrive at a higher level.
