Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.
Frimpong, 21, is an exciting young defender impressing with German side Leverkusen.
He’s an attack-minded full-back that has been in amazing form this season, scoring five goals and making three assists in 21 appearances across all competitions.
The Dutch speedster is currently at the World Cup with his country the Netherlands, but he’s been an unused substitute in all three group stage matches so far. Incidentally, he’s still waiting for his first senior cap for Netherlands, so it would be quite special if that happens at a World Cup in the knockout rounds.
Journalist Simon Phillips has shared that Leverkusen’s 21-year-old talent is now in Chelsea’s sights.
Apparently, the Blues owners are keeping a close eye on the Bundesliga star, who’s also been impressing in the Champions League this season.
It sounds like a summer move is more likely than a January raid, though.
Speaking to GMS, Simon Phillips said: “I think it’s a position that Chelsea will address in the summer rather than January, but they are starting to look at targets. Jeremie Frimpong is on there.
“Chelsea have scouted him a few times in recent seasons and they’ve stepped that up again now under the new ownership.”
When asked his dream club to join, Frimpong told Sport Bild back in March: “…was actually always Chelsea FC. As a kid, I used to watch Chelsea games with my uncle, mostly because of Didier Drogba.”
Chelsea’s links to Frimpong aren’t too concrete yet, but it’s great to hear a player admit he dreams of a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Frimpong, who Sport1 valued at €30million (£26million) earlier this year, is a superb transfer target for the Blues.
In our view, the Leverkusen youngster could be the perfect competition and cover for Reece James in a right wing-back position.
Graham Potter’s squad is definitely lacking an alternative to James, who is currently recovering from his knee injury.
