In his competitive debut for Hibernian FC, Ghanaian goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott unfortunately suffered an injury during their 6-1 victory over Inter Club d’Escaldes of Andorra in the Europa Conference League.
The goalkeeping crisis for Hibernian started before the match even began, as David Marshall, the designated starter, had to be withdrawn from the lineup due to an injury sustained during warm-up.
As a result, Joseph Wollacott, earning his first-ever start for the club, took on the responsibility of guarding the Hibs’ net. He showcased his skills early on with an impressive save against a dangerous free-kick from the opposition.
However, shortly after, Wollacott encountered misfortune as he signaled distress, clutching his thigh while outside the penalty box. It became evident that he would be unable to continue, leading manager Lee Johnson to quickly make a substitution. Max Boruc was brought on as Wollacott was forced to leave the field.
The injury to Wollacott further compounded Hibernian’s goalkeeping woes, as both Marshall and Wollacott were sidelined within the first 20 minutes of the game. This forced them to turn to their third-choice goalkeeper, Max Boruc, to see them through the rest of the match.
Joseph Wollacott joined Hibernian this summer on a three-year deal after transferring from Charlton Athletic. Despite the unfortunate injury, his debut performance showed promise, and the club will hope for a swift recovery for the talented Ghanaian goalkeeper.
The injury raises concerns about his availability for Ghana’s upcoming 2023 AFCON qualifier against the Central African Republic.
