The Chairman of Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC), Nana Akwasi Apinkra Awuah, has called on supporters of the club to remain calm and allow the Ghana Police Service to handle the investigation into the death of Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley.
Frimpong tragically lost his life during Asante Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman in Nsoatre, where he was fatally stabbed.
Speaking at a vigil held in his memory at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, February 9, Nana Apinkra urged fans to exercise restraint while authorities work to bring justice.
IMC Chairman Appeals for Patience
“It’s been a week since Pooley’s death. The matter is with national security. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has promised to help us, and we are pleased with what he has done in the past week,” he assured.
He further urged fans not to act based on rumors or emotions but to allow due process to take its course.
“Don’t act on what you have heard and what someone has done. Let’s allow the law to delve into the matter. I promise you we will not allow this matter to go without answers,” he added.
Nana Apinkra also encouraged anyone with useful information to come forward.
“If you know anyone who has information and can help in the matter, bring it to the Kotoko Secretariat so we can add it to the other findings we have,” he stated.
Police and GFA Take Action
So far, the Ghana Police Service has arrested six individuals in connection with the incident. Among them, former Sunyani West MP, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, and another suspect have been granted bail.
In response to the tragic event, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also engaged all Premier League clubs and their supporters to address security concerns and prevent future occurrences.
