Godwin Ablordey, a former star player of Asante Kotoko, has expressed his disapproval of the current players in the team, stating that they would not have made the cut during his playing days.
Ablordey, who is now an assistant coach at King Faisal, shared his thoughts in an interview with Akoma FM. He compared the current crop of players to the quality of players they had in the past, such as Stephen Oduro and Jordan, among others.
Ablordey attributed the lack of quality players in the Ghana Premier League to the mediocre level of players in other clubs. He noted that during their time, most players were in the senior national teams, unlike the current situation where most players are average.
Ablordey acknowledged that the current management cannot be blamed for recruiting these average players because of the league’s low quality. He suggested that Asante Kotoko should consider scouting outside Ghana for quality players, even though it may be expensive. He also called on the fans to support the team financially by attending matches to enable the management to recruit the kind of quality they desire.
“They (Kotoko) have no special quality players like they used to have in the past such as Stephen Oduro, Jordan, and the rest.
“I won’t blame the current management for recruiting these average players because the league itself lacks quality. Most of the players playing in the other clubs are average ones unlike during our time when most of the players were in the senior national teams”
“If Kotoko really wants to recruit quality, they need to scout outside the shores of Ghana and that is costly. The fans however must support the team financially by attending matches so management can recruit the kind of quality they (supporters) are craving for”
In conclusion, Ablordey regretfully stated that none of the current Asante Kotoko players would have made it to their team during their playing days.
“I’m sorry to say this, but none of the current Kotoko crop of players would have gotten a place in our team during our playing days”
